Alexander Zverev of Germany clinched his 14th ATP tour title on Saturday with a 6-4, 7-6 (3) win over Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas in the Mexican Open final.
Zverev won 78 percent of his first serve points and saved six of eight break points to prevail in two hours and 18 minutes in the Pacific resort city of Acapulco.
“It’s been an incredible journey. This week has been the most fun I’ve had on a tennis court in a few months, a few years maybe,” Zverev said. “I want to thank everybody – the organizers, the fans – for making this event possible,” the 23-year-old added.
It was just the second time that Zverev has beaten Tsitsipas in seven meetings between the pair.
Fifth-ranked Tsitsipas lavished praise on his opponent and expressed a desire to return to Acapulco in 2022 as he continues his quest for a maiden ATP 500 title.
“I tried my best but Alex was too good,” the 22-year-old said. “It’s been a learning experience. We have a great rivalry and I look forward to more big matches against him in the future.”
