Ten years to the day after losing to James Blake in the final of the ATP World Tour event in New Haven, Mardy Fish gained some revenge on his good friend in the final of the PowerShares Legends New Haven.
On August 25, 2007, Blake defeated Fish 7-5, 6-4 in the final of the New Haven Open at the Connecticut Tennis Center on the campus of Yale University. However, exactly 10 years to the day of that defeat to Blake on the very same court, Fish then defeated his good friend and former U.S. Davis Cup teammate 6-4 in the one-set championship match at the sixth event for 2017 on the North American tennis circuit for champion tennis players over the age of 30.
Fish was not originally in the New Haven field, replacing Andy Roddick, who had to withdraw from the event after sustaining a leg injury in the PowerShares Series final in Winston-Salem, N.C. on Sunday night. The win marked Fish’s second career PowerShares Series title after winning the championship in Newport, R.I. in July, defeating Roddick in the final.
Fish earned 400 PowerShares ranking points with the tournament win to move into third place in the PowerShares Series rankings with 1000 points. Blake earned 200 points to remain in second place with 1100 points, 100 behind points leader Andy Roddick. Philippoussis falls to fourth place with 800 points. John McEnroe is in fifth place with 600 points, followed by Jim Courier with 300 points and Chang with 200 points.
To advance into the final, Fish beat Mark Philippoussis earlier on Friday night, while Blake beat Michael Chang 7-5 on Thursday night. The event was played in conjunction with the WTA Tour’s Connecticut Open.
Each PowerShares Series event features two one-set semifinal matches and a one-set championship match and, for the third year, players make their own line calls with assistance of electronic line-calling.
