We are now in a new year in tennis with so much to look forward to in 2020. While there are a host of next generation players on the brink of knocking off some of the usual faces from the top end of the world rankings.
Here is a look at who the stars of 2020 may well be once the year is up.
Bianca Andreescu
Canadian Bianca Andreescu won her opening Grand Slam singles title in the US Open back in September at Flushing Meadows, New York, and that may well be the first of many major tournaments as it will have given her a great deal of confidence.
The 19-year-old has been tipped to be the future star of the women’s game and, given the way she lacked any fear in despatching Serena Williams is the US Open and Canadian Open finals in 2019, it is easy to see why many believe she will dominate the sport.
Andreescu is up to number five in the world rankings and if she is able to land at least one of the four Grand Slams next year, she could edge closer to that number one spot which is currently held by Ashleigh Barty.
Novak Djokovic
2019 was another solid year for world number one Novak Djokovic, who won two of the four Grand Slam titles with victories in the Australian Open and Wimbledon.
The Serbian is now on 16 Grand Slams and will have his eye on Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer’s tallies in 2020, which stand at 19 and 20 respectively.
Although there will be fresh challengers to Djokovic’s position as the best player in the men’s game, he remains the one to beat. The 32-year-old ended 2019 with success in the Mubadala World Tennis Championship exhibition, beating Karen Khachanov in straight sets.
Djokovic went into the 2020 Australian Open as the +162.50 favourite in the tennis betting for the Melbourne Park event. He emerged winning a record-extending eighth title in the tournament.
Stefanos Tsitsipas
Stefanos Tsitsipas won the 2019 ATP World Tour Finals last November, the biggest prize of his career so far. The Greek player defeated Dominic Thiem in the final in London 6-7, 6-2, 7-6 to get his hands on the trophy.
Tsitsipas will be targeting success in one of the four Grand Slams in 2020. The best he has performed so far in a Grand Slam was a semi-final appearance in the 2019 Australian Open where he lost to Rafael Nadal in the last four.
The 21-year-old should be able to build upon his victory in London as he has had wins over Nadal and Roger Federer in that tournament. This season looks to be the one where he has can really make a name for himself in the men’s game.
