Defending U.S. Open women’s champion Bianca Andreescu’s withdrawal from the U.S. Open left the tournament without its two previous singles champions for the first time since 2003 and for the third time in the Open Era. Rafael Nadal previously announced his intention not to defend his 2019 title in New York. In 2003, Pete Sampras, who retired, and Serena Williams, who had a knee injury, did not show to defend their titles in New York. Margaret Court and Ken Rosewall did the same in 1971.
