Sportsbooks give Taylor Fritz best odds for an American to win the US Open in over a decade
It’s the longest Grand Slam tournament drought in American tennis history. An American man has not won a major singles titles since Andy Roddick won the 2003 U.S. Open. However, at the 2022 U.S. Open, Taylor Fritz has been given the best odds to break this unflattering streak for U.S. tennis.
Fritz, the world No. xx and fresh off a quarterfinal finish at Wimbledon, is given +2500 odds to win the title at the Billie Jean King USTA National Tennis Center, placing him seventh on the early odds market, according to OddsChecker here: https://www.oddschecker.com/us/tennis/us-open-mens/2022-us-open/winner. According to OddsChecker, it is the best odds given to any American man to win a major title since Mardy Fish was given +2000 odds to win the 2011 US Open.
Novak Djokovic, despite his unknown playing status due to his vaccination status, is listed as the favorite as of now at +150, with defending champion Daniil Medvedev the No. 2 favorite at +275. Rafael Nadal, whose status is also in doubt due to his stomach injury, is the the No. 3 favorite at +600, ahead of him. Carlos Alcaraz is the No. 4 favorite at +450 followed by Alexander Zverev, also in doubt with his ankle injury, at +1200 and Stefanos Tsitsipas, +1400.
“It’s been nearly 20 years since an American has won a Grand Slam title,” said Oddschecker spokesman Kyle Newman. “It’s been more than a decade since an American has even reach a Grand Slam final. Sprtsbooks truly believe that Taylor Fritz has a chance to end American tennis’ longest title drought.”
Earlier this year, Fritz won the singles title in Indian Wells, beating Nadal in the final in what may have been the most significant win by an American man in tennis in 15 years, as you can read here: http://www.worldtennismagazine.com/archives/20748
