ATHENS, Ga. — Mikael Pernfors, the two-time NCAA singles champion and 1986 French Open runner-up, was the No. 1 draft pick in the University of Georgia Men’s Tennis Alumni Team Tournament conducted Saturday, August 13.
Pernfors was chosen to play for the team captained by Allen Miller, his former teammate and the 1983 NCAA doubles champion, as part of the four-team competition that will take place at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex Nov. 12-13, the weekend when the Georgia football team plays away at Mississippi State.
Al Parker, the celebrated four-time All-American and the all-time leader in USTA national junior championships, was selected No. 2 by the team captained by Trey Carter, a member of Georgia’s first two NCAA team championship teams in 1985 and 1987.
Stephen Enochs, a member of the 1987 NCAA championship team and a semifinalist at the 1989 NCAA singles tournament, was drafted No. 3 overall by captain Bobby Mariencheck, an NCAA doubles semifinalist in 1991.
Jack Frierson, a member of Georgia’s 1989 and 1991 NCAA runner-up squads, was the No. 4 pick by the team captained by four-time All-American Jay Laschinger.
Other notable draft selections include two-time NCAA singles champion and 2001 “NCAA Triple Crown” winner Matias Boeker and his NCAA doubles champion partner and 2009 U.S. Open mixed doubles champion Travis Parrot being selected by Team Allen Miller, current Georgia men’s associate head coach, two-time NCAA team champion and 2006 U.S. Open junior doubles champion Jaime Hunt, two-time NCAA team champion Philip Johnson and four-time All-American Mike Sell being drafted by Team Bobby Mariencheck, 1992 and 1993 NCAA singles runner-up Wade McGuire and three-time All-American John Roddick being drafted by Team Jay Laschinger. Becky Birchmore Campen, who played on the 1963 Georgia men’s team as one of the first trailblazing women to play on a collegiate men’s team, was selected by the team captained by Trey Carter along with 2017 NCAA doubles runner-up Robert Loeb.
“This is kind of like an Old Timer’s Game for our men’s tennis program,” said Georgia coach Manuel Diaz. “Our network of former players is a very tight knit group who are really an extended family, who are very supportive of each other and the Georgia tennis program. We are looking forward to so many Bulldog greats returning to the courts in Athens to relive their glory from the past in a friendly but certainly highly competitive event.”
Jim Donnan, the former Georgia football coach and tennis letterman at N.C. State University, is serving as the Commissioner of the competition. Georgia Bulldog media personality and historian Jeff Dantzler served as the host to Saturday’s Alumni Draft, which was conducted via Zoom.
