Frances Tiafoe, Tommy Paul, Mackenzie McDonald, Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram were named to the U.S. Davis Cup team by new U.S Davis Cup captain Bob Bryan and the U.S. Tennis Association. The team will represent the U.S. in the 2023 Davis Cup Finals — Group Stage matches September 12-17 in Split, Croatia. The event will be played on a indoor hard court.
Taylor Fritz, the U.S. No. 1 who has an ATP ranking of No. 9, will not play in this round of Davis Cup. The USTA made no mention of Fritz and his absence in their press release and there was no formal media availability for Bryan to discuss his team choices. Tiafoe, a U.S. Open semifinalist last year, is ranked No. 10 in the ATP rankings and Tommy Paul, the Australian Open semifinalist earlier this year, is ranked No. 13. McDonald is ranked No. 43.
The Davis Cup Group Stage consists of four groups of four nations competing to advance to the eight-nation knockout stage that will crown this year’s Davis Cup champion November 21-26 in Malaga, Spain. The U.S. is competing in Group D in Split and will play Croatia, Finland and the Netherlands in a round-robin competition where the top two finishers in the Group advance to Malaga. Each matchup is a best-of-three tie featuring two singles and one doubles match. The dates and times of the Americans’ matches are below.
