Serena Williams won her fourth Wimbledon title and 13th major singles title by sweeping Vera Zvonareva of Russia in straight sets in the women’s final.
The top-ranked and defending champion American beat the No. 12th-seeded Russian 6-3, 6-2 in 67 minutes Saturday to extend the Williams family dominance at the All England Club.
Williams served nine aces, broke three times and never faced a break point. She finished the tournament without dropping a set.
Williams added to the Wimbledon titles she won in 2002, 2003 and 2009. This was the first time she defeated someone other than her sister Venus in the final.
The Williams sisters have now won nine of the last 11 Wimbledon titles
It was also only the third time Williams had won a major title without conceding a single set all championship, matching her 2002 and 2008 US Open efforts.
The victory also moved Williams to outright sixth place all-time in major singles titles won with 13 career majors, the 28-year-old now one clear of her childhood idol and former Fed Cup and Olympic coach Billie-Jean King.
Only Australia’s Margaret Smith Court (24), German Steffi Graf (22), fellow Americans’ Helen Wills Moody (19) and Chris Evert (18) and Czech-born American Martina Navratilova (18) have won more major singles titles.
“This one’s very special. Hey Billie, I got you. This is No.13 for me now and it’s just amazing to be among such great people,” Williams said on-court to the BBC’s Sue Barker post-match.
Williams finished the tournament with a record 89 aces – 59 more than any other player in the 128-woman draw. She hit 9 aces against Zvonareva, but hit 19 each in her third-round win over Dominka Cibulkova and fourth-round win over Maria Sharapova.
