Kriegler Brink of South Africa, a tennis teaching professional at The Moorings Club in Vero Beach, Fla., continued his run at the Warren Insurance USTA Futures at The Boulevard in Vero Beach Thursday advancing into the quarterfinals with a 6-4, 6-4 win over No. 7 seed Mark Verryth of Australia.
Brink, who has no ATP ranking and playing in his first competitive environment since he last played college tennis at Texas Christian University two years ago, will play Daniel Kosakowski of the United States in Friday’s quarterfinals. Kosakowski defeated top seed Artem Sitak of New Zealand Thursday.
The left-handed Brink was for much of this winter Ivan Lendl’s sparring partner as the Czech Hall of Famer meticulously prepared for his February 28 Madison Square Garden exhibition match with McEnroe, also a lefty. In Wednesday’s first round, he defeated Dennis Novikov of the United States, a 17-year-old future pro prospect.
