Rafael Nadal has reached the U.S. Open semifinals for the second year in a row by finishing a rain-interrupted victory over Fernando Gonzalez.
The No. 3-seeded Nadal – trying to complete a career Grand Slam – beat No. 11 Gonzalez 7-6 (4), 7-6 (2), 6-0 in a quarterfinal that began Thursday and ended Saturday.
They were forced off court Thursday night because of rain, with Nadal leading 3-2 in the second-set tiebreaker. There was no action Friday in Flushing Meadows because of showers.
When play resumed Saturday, Nadal swept through four straight points, all on errors by Gonzalez, to take the second set. Gonzalez wound up with 59 unforced errors, 46 more than Nadal.
