Important numbers to take from Roger Federer’s 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4 win over Andy Murray Sunday in the Wimbledon men’s singles final — 7, 17, 286 and 76.
- 7 for the number of Wimbledon men’s singles titles Federer has now won, tying him with Pete Sampras and Willie Renshaw for the most in Wimbledon history.
- 17 for the number of record major men’s singles titles Federer won with his victory over Murray, now three better than Sampras in second place-all time.
- 286 for the number of weeks Federer will be ranked No. 1 in the world starting Monday, equaling the all-time mark set by Sampras. Federer will break the mark the following week.
- 76 for the number of years since a British man last won the men’s singles title at Wimbledon (since 1936), a curse, so to speak, that Murray was looking to end by beating Federer in the Wimbledon final.
It was an emotional conclusion to Wimbledon that finished under Wimbledon’s Centre Court roof in a match where Murray came out like gangbusters to capture the first set, before Federer hung on to edge out the second set. At 1-1 in the third set, the rains came, and after a 41-minute rain delay, Centre Court roof-closure delay, the match was concluded indoors, conditions that favored the hard-serving, forehand-belting Federer. The 30-year-old Swiss took control of the new conditions and seized the final two sets comfortably to win the title.
Approximately 20,000 fans were on the grounds watching the match on a big-screen TV on the named “Murray Mount” and VIPS on the Royal Box included Prince William’s wife, Kate, her sister Pippa Middleton, soccer star David Beckham, his wife “Posh” Spice, British Prime Minister David Cameron as well as many other Wimbledon champions, including Rod Laver, who on the first of his two Grand Slam s 50 years ago. Murray was the first British man since Bunny Austin in 1938 to play in the Wimbledon men’s singles final.
One of the turning points in the match came with Federer leading 3-2 in the third set, just after the roof was closed, with Federer winning a 26-point game, Federer finally able to break on his sixth break point opportunity.
Here’s how the day unfolded minute by minute via my Twitter feed from my @TennisPublisher Twitter handle, the documented all of the twists and turns, flow of the match an expert analysis from commentators and tweeters alike. For those not too familiar with twitter the “@” is someone’s Twitter handle – or profile – and “RT” means that a tweet is “Re-Tweeted.”
