Russia, playing as the Russian Tennis Federation due to sanctions related to doping violations on the Olympic platform, won their third Davis Cup by Rakuten title – and their first since 2006 – after victories for Andrey Rublev and Daniil Medvedev fended off a spirited challenge from the Croatian team in Sunday’s final in Madrid. Rublev defeated Croatia’s star player this week, Borna Gojo, before Medvedev sealed the title with a straight-sets triumph over Marin Cilic. The victory for RTF comes just four weeks after they won the Billie Jean King Cup title in Prague – making RTF the fourth nation to win both the Davis Cup and Billie Jean King Cup titles in the same year, and the first since Czech Republic achieved the feat in 2012. With the RTF boys team having won the Junior Davis Cup in October, they also become the fifth nation to win both the Davis Cup and Junior Davis Cup titles in the same year, and the first since Spain in 2004. |
