Reigning U.S. Open champion Juan Martin Del Potro won a barn-burner five-setter with American James Blake, coming back from a service break down in the fifth set to advance into the third round with a 6-4, 6-7, 5-7, 6-3, 10-8 victory in four hours, 18 minutes.
Blake, the recently-turned 30-year-old who has dropped from No. 10 at the end of 2008 to his current ranking of No. 45, led 2-0 in the fifth set, but was not able to fend off the power and talent from the man who ended Roger Federer’s five-year U.S. Open reign last September.
“It was a great victory for my career. I have no words to explain this moment,” said an exhausted Del Potro to ESPN’s Tom Rinaldi following the win. “I am completely tired but I have a day of rest.”
Del Potro had the opportunity to serve for the match in the 12th game only to be denied by Blake before he finally took the advantage again in the 17th and sealed it with a massive serve that Blake was unable to return on the next game.
ESPN Analysts Darren Cahill and Mary Joe Fernandez praised the way Blake played in the match. Cahill said Blake played the best he has seen in four of five years and Fernandez praised him for his positive attitude throughout the match. Blake is in Australia with new coach Kelly Jones, the former No. 1 ranked doubles player. He parted with long-time coach Brian Barker last year.
Del Potro will next play Florian Mayer of Germany and could face a tough fourth-rounder against either Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland or potentially Marin Cilic of Croatia.
