I was so happy that Petra Kvitova, the 21-year-old girl from Fulnek, Czech Republic, shocked Wimbledon’s Centre Court by winning over Maria Sharapova in the final. It was very special to see the way she handled herself playing on such a grand stage in her first major singles final.
Her game had super quality all the way with great heavy returns, a very effective serve and smart mixed shots with variations of sliced deep enough balls. She had a good solid start and put Sharapova under pressure from very beginning and showed her no respect. Petra was also able to use a smart side spin on her lefty serve, especially on her first serve at important times in the match, and was able to win the very important points. Even the experienced Sharapova was not able to deal with it. Kvitova was not scared to hit her groundstrokes with full power to reach many winners off the ground, which were often for Maria unreachable! Kvitova show her potential to win already last year, but was stopped at semis by Serena Williams, but her game and confidence started to grow tremendously after winning the WTA Madrid event this spring. The grass event at Eastbourne was also very good for her, where she dealt with strong
winds during whole week to test her ability.
Petra is a very modest player and she will for sure try to run for to be number one! We saw also very positive attitude and her fighting spirit, chasing after every ball. A new champion has been born! Well done Petra!
It was nice for me to see another great Wimbledon tournament where the Czech Republic won three titles! (Kveta Peschke in women’s doubles with Slovenian Srebotnik and Yveta Benesova mixed doubles with Melzer from Austria.
