It was another historic night of late night tennis at the U.S. Open which will require edits to the history books.
Alexander Zverev defeated Tomas Etcheverry 5-7, 7-5, 7-1, 6-3 in the second latest finishing match in the U.S. Open, ending, officially per the official U.S. Open scorecard at 2:35 am. In 2022, Carlos Alcaraz defeated Jannik Sinner in a quarterfinal match that ended at 2:50 am. The Zverev – Etcheverry match was played on Louis Armstrong Stadium, making it the longest finishing match on that specific court.
Meanwhile, Aryna Sabalenka and Ekaterina Alexandrova started their match at 12:08 am, due to the length of the Coco Gauff three-set win over Elina Svitolina and the Frances Tiafoe five-set win over Ben Shelton during the day session and the Alexei Popyrin four-set upset win over Novak Djokovic in the first night session match. It was the latest start of a U.S. Open match in the history of the tournament. The match ended at 1:48 am, tying for the second latest finishing women’s match in U.S. Open history. The latest finishing women’s match ever at the U.S. Open was Maria Sakkari beat Bianca Andreescu 6-7(2), 7-6(6), 6-3 in the early morning on Sept. 7, 2021 in the fourth round at 2:12 am. The Sabalenka – Alexandrova match finish tied the 1:48 am finish between Madison Keys and Alison Riske in 2016, won by Keys 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-2 in 2 hours, 26 minutes in the first-round.
