On Friday, the French fans couldn’t make up their mind, one time chanting for Novak Djokovic and the next for Roger Federer, but Saturday they were solidly behind the player from China. Yes, Francesca Schiavone did have a loud and passionate cheering section, but the spectators wanted were not on the side of the defending champion.
It’s very exciting for the Chinese everywhere. I got e-mails from all my Chinese friends saying how wonderful it was to have a champion from China. Na Li is the first Chinese to win a Grand Slam singles title. They don’t really count Michael Chang as he is really American. One of the e-mails said .. “It is very exciting to have a Chinese Chinese in the final.”
Well, she made history today, and a lot of friends along the way. Personally I like her. She has a four letter name .. so easy to spell and type. All players should change and have Chinese names as far as I’m concerned.. especially the Russians. Li also doesn’t have any annoying habits .. like screaming, grunting or making any of many objectionable noises like so many of the others. The FS AHHHHEEEE, makes me want to scream.
We are all also grateful that she finished the match in two sets… thank you Na Li, now I won’t be here to midnight again tonight.
It was emotion against calm, hyper-activity vs. focus, and focus and calm ruled the day. There were a few scary moments when Na Li lost three straight games after being up 4-2 in the second, but for most of the match she was pretty much in control. All the cameras were pointed in her direction, the photographers having already decided that she would be the one that we would need photos of when it was over, and for once we made the right call.
7-0 in the breaker .. amazing. She fell on the court in joy .. very tense for the photo pit as ball boys and security people were all running around in front of us, but I managed to get one frame of her laying on the court, and thank heaven it’s sharp and the right exposure. So that’s it for today .. again I’m writing short as I need to get on the 10 PM shuttle.
