Mutua Madrid Open will begin using blue clay as surface in 2012
The Mutua Madrid Open, an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament, will feature blue clay courts starting in 2012. Madrid marks the first professional tournament to feature blue clay. Two of the most successful ATP players didn’t seem thrilled with the change in Madrid. Rafael Nadal vented on Twitter, saying, “It’s a lack of respect for tradition and the history of this area, I hope one day not having to play on blue grass.” Roger Federer said it was difficult to talk about it at the current moment.
MasterCard signs three-year sponsorship deal with Sony Ericsson Open
MasterCard Worldwide has signed a three-year sponsorship agreement with the Sony Ericsson Open to become the tournament’s official card and preferred payment method. Tickets for United States vs. Belarus Fed Cup tie in Worcester go on sale on Friday, December 9
The USTA recently announced that tickets for the 2012 Fed Cup by BNP Paribas World Group II First Round between the United States and Belarus will go on sale to the general public on Friday, December 9 at 10 a.m. EST. An exclusive pre-sale for USTA members begins on Wednesday, December 7 at 10 a.m. EST and ends on Thursday, December 8 or while supplies last. The United States vs. Belarus tie will take place at the DCU Center in Worcester, Mass. from February 4-5, 2012. Ticket prices range from $60 to $225 and are sold as two-day packages. Gigi Fernandez launches “Master Doubles with Gigi”
According to a press release, Gigi Fernandez, one of the greatest doubles players of all-time, is proud to introduce “Master Doubles with Gigi” to tennis clubs across the United States. Produced by Net Results Marketing, Inc. and Gigi Fernandez, the new program will help amateur tennis players master the lost art of doubles with the unique perspective of International Tennis Hall of Fame Inductee and two-time Olympic Gold Medalist, Gigi Fernandez. Fernandez, who won 17 Grand Slam doubles titles during her career, is now available to spend a full or half day at tennis clubs around the country. Former USTA Marketing Director Kathleen Francis to lead Women in Sports & Events organization
Former USTA Marketing Director Kathleen Francis has decided to take over as the head honcho of the Women in Sports & Events organization, which is a group that is a resource for professional women in the sports and events industry. It has 1,000 members in 10 chapters throughout the country. Francis will replace founder and board chair Sue Rodin, who started the organization in 1993. Francis has a prestigious background in the sports industry having held senior positions with Major League Baseball and the Meadowlands Sports & Entertainment Complex. Recently, she founded Oasis Sports Ventures, a marketing and development company for amateur sports programs.
Several players announced for 2011 Kia Australian Open Wild Card Playoffs event in Atlanta
Robby Ginepri, Denis Kudla and Jack Sock have accepted invitations to participate in the upcoming 2011 Kia Australian Wild Card Playoffs, which will be held at the Racquet Club of the South in Atlanta from December 16-18. Melanie Oudin, Jamie Hampton, Coco Vandeweghe and Alison Riske will participate in the women’s event. Ryan Harrison and Lauren Davis won the 2010 playoffs to earn main draw wild cards into the 2011 Australian Open in Melbourne. The USTA and Tennis Australia have a reciprocal agreement in which men’s and women’s singles main draw wild cards into the 2011 US Open and the 2012 Australian Open are exchanged.
Ambassador Hewitt already coming through for Apia International Sydney
In September, former world No. 1 and two-time Grand Slam champion Lleyton Hewitt agreed to become an ambassador for the Apia International Sydney. Now, just seven weeks before the start of one of the biggest Australian Open warm-up tennis tournaments, Hewitt is coming through for the event by teaming up with good friend and former “Home and Away” star Kate Ritchie for the first annual Apia International Sydney Lleyton Hewitt Charity Day, which will be held on November 27. The event will be held to help raise funds for the Children’s Hospital of Westmead. Hewitt and Ritchie will be joined by many Australian celebrities and athletes including tennis superstars Patrick Rafter, John Newcombe and Bernard Tomic.
Nadal-Ferrer exhibition match in Mexico cancelled due to lack of sponsorship
According to a Twitter post from Matt Cronin of TennisReporters.net, the exhibition tennis match in Mexico between Spaniards Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer has been cancelled due to lack of sponsorship. A spokesman said resources were lacking and tournament organizers were unable to guarantee necessary minimum.
Oudin to continue working with USTA coach Tom Gullickson
Tennis.com has learned that American Melanie Oudin will continue working with USTA coach Tom Gullickson at least through the beginning of the 2012 season. In late September, the surprise 2009 US Open quarterfinalist split with longtime coach Brian DeVilliers. The Georgia native finished the 2011 season with a demoralizing 10-33 record.
Russia’s Shamil Tarpischev receives Golden Achievement Award
Russian Tennis Federation President Shamil Tarpischev recently received the 2012 Golden Achievement Award from the International Tennis Hall of Fame & Museum and International Tennis Federation (ITF). The President of the Russian Tennis Federation since 1991, Tarpischev has been heavily involved in the growth of tennis in Russia in all aspects, including as a coach and captain of the national team. He is also a member of the International Olympic Committee. ITF President Francesco Ricci Bitti presented the award on Sunday, November 7 at Olympic Stadium in Moscow, during the 2011 Fed Cup by BNP Paribas World Group Final between Russia and the Czech Republic. Also participating in the presentation was Roman Murashkovsky, Russian Tennis Federation Vice President and an ITF board member, and Valentina Matvienko, head of the Federation Council of the Russian Federation. The Golden Achievement Award is given jointly by the Hall of Fame and ITF. It is presented annually to an individual who has made important contributions internationally to tennis in the fields of administration, promotion or education, and who has devoted long and outstanding service to the sport. “As a result of Shamil’s leadership, the sport of tennis has grown immensely in Russia, and some of the world’s greatest champions have come from this nation,” said Francesco Ricci Bitti, ITF President. “From engaging young people in tennis to developing elite champions, to playing an active role in international competitions including the Fed Cup, Davis Cup and the Olympic Games, to his contributions as a member of the IOC, Shamil’s dedication to the game and ability to enable positive developments in tennis has been immensely beneficial to the sport worldwide.
