The ATP Tour heads to China this week for the 2014 renewal of the Shanghai Rolex Masters, one of the most prestigious tournaments in the tennis calendar outside of the four Grand Slams. World number one Novak Djokovic arrives in Shanghai as the defending champion following his straight sets victory over Juan Martin Del Potro last year and he’s been put in as the 11/8 favorite to successfully retain the Shanghai Masters crown. The Serb comes into this event off the back of an impressive win at the China Open where he completely blew away Tomas Berdych in the final, 6-0, 6-2. Djokovic is sure to be a popular choice with tennis punters this week and it would be no surprise to see him retain the title he won in 2013. Although Tomas Berdych could not live with Novak in last week’s final, he had played well to reach that stage of the China Open and may well be able to make it to the latter stages in Shanghai also. Berdych can be backed at odds of 18/1 to win the Shanghai Rolex Masters at betfair.com.
One player who will be absolutely desperate to win the 2014 Shanghai Rolex Masters is Scotland’s Andy Murray. The former world number two has been unable to recapture the form which saw him win the 2013 Wimbledon title since return to the ATP tour following a back injury. Murray now sits outside the top eight in the rankings and he needs a number of points to reclaim a position in the elite group and make it to the tour finals in London at the end of the year. Andy won the Shenzhen Open two weeks ago, which was his first success for fourteen months, but he was unable to make it back to back wins, and was knocked out of the China Open last week at the semi final stage by Novak Djokovic. Andy Murray has been put in at odds of 9/1 for the Shanghai Rolex Masters by the odds compilers at Betfair, and a victory for Murray in China this week would certainly blow the race for the world tour finals wide open.
Rafael Nadal made his return from injury at last week’s China Open and managed to make it to the quarter final stage before suffering a slightly surprising defeat at the hands of Slovakian Martin Klizan. Nadal actually took the first set, but was unable to close out the match, losing 6-7, 6-4, 6-3. When you consider the fact that Nadal has been unable to play since Wimbledon due to a wrist injury, it was always likely that the Spaniard would need a few matches under his belt before reaching the top of his game. The world number two has now won a total of 64 career title and with a few matches now behind him, it wouldn’t be a huge shock if Rafael Nadal were to be very competitive in Shanghai this week. You can get odds of 5/1 on Nadal winning the 2014 Shanghai Rolex Masters at betfair.com.
US Open finalist Kei Nishikori took his second Japan Open in three years last week and enters this tournament as one of the most in form players in the field. Taking this into consideration, the odds of 18/1 on offer at Betfair look very much on the generous side and this exciting young Japanese star could well make those odds look way off the mark come next weekend. Nishikori is now up into the top seven in the ATP rankings and will be keen to cement that position with the tour finals on the horizon.
