Nick Kyrgios is pretty much the hottest player in tennis at the moment.
He won his seventh career singles title at the Citi Open in Washington, D.C., coming on the heels of winning the doubles title in Atlanta the previous week and, of course, his runner-up finish at Wimbledon.
Did anyone see Kyrgios capturing lighting in a bottle for the best run of tennis in his career to date?
The answer is… yes. It was Nico Godsick, the 17-year-old son of two-time Olympic gold medallist Mary Joe Fernandez and famed tennis agent Tony Godsick.
Fernandez, who works as a commentator for ESPN, stated during Wimbledon that Nico gave her a heads up that something had changed with Kyrgios when he had the chance to practice with him in Germany before Wimbledon.
“Mom He’s trying,” Fernandez said on ESPN during Wimbledon, relaying what Nico told her in a phone conversation. “He’s engaged in the practices. They have purpose. One day he wanted to play tiebreakers, another day he wanted to hit targets.”
Fernandez continued, “He said, ‘watch out. He’ playing so well. He could go far at Wimbledon.’”
Cliff Drysdale, in the ESPN segment with Fernandez during the segment, then responded, “So Nico is a genius.”
