What’s up with the tug of war some of the women players are having with their skirts?
Shall I start with Venus, or should I save the best/worst for last? What the heck.. may as well just go for it and lead off with V. What in the world is she thinking? I get it… the black sparkly dress for night time in NYC. I can sort of go along with that, but the fuchsia with the flashy fireworks pattern for day matches? The effect is blinding, with the sun bouncing off the diamond like jewels. I’m surprised that her opponents aren’t complaining.
And what about those white shoes and visor? Why in the world is the self-proclaimed fashionista wearing clunky unattractive white shoes with that dress? Especially the black evening attire. It’s like wearing army boots with your designer gown on the red carpet. I defended her when everyone else was writing trash about her “illusion” outfit in Australia and Paris, but if she has the illusion that this is cool, she is dead wrong on this one. I’m all for someone daring to be different, and putting their identity out there for everyone to see, but this fashion statement is, in my opinion, is not well thought out. Truth is, either dress might be cool at 3 AM, in a dance club with drinks flowing and music pounding but it’s not working for tennis. It looks uncomfortable and distracting the way it rides up on every shot so she has to keep tugging at the hem after every point. Then on long points it slithers up her body to the point where it look like she is just wearing a shirt with her nude-colored knickers.
Don’t these players try wearing their outfits for a practice session before unveiling them at a Grand Slam? Of course maybe the undies peep show thing is supposed to be part of the look, she does have them emblazoned with the same eye popping pattern as the dress. She apparently has a different one for every match. Tuesday night has really topped herself with a neon pink that hurts your eyes even on TV, and up close in the photo pit, makes my eyes tear. Oh yeah, I almost forgot the black bra straps – not good Venus.
John McEnroe and Dick Enberg had an interesting exchange about the dress..
John McEnroe: I think that dress has distracted [Venus].
Dick Enberg: It’s distracting you.
McEnroe: That’s a fair point.
CBS went on to give a tug count… Venus 42 tugs during her match against Shahar Peer.
Venus beat Francesca Schiavone in the quarterfinals, so let’s see what she has in store for us for the semifinals. At least she’s giving us something to talk and blog about in an otherwise pretty uneventful US Open.
Then there is Caroline Wozniacki. Her LITTLE gray dress is so short, that no matter how much she pulls at the hem, it is never going to cover her bum. However, she does get fun irreverent points for matching her nails to her underwear.
