ON THIS DAY IN TENNIS HISTORY – November 22
1992 – Boris Becker celebrates his 25th birthday in style, defeating world No. 1 Jim Courier 6-4, 6-3, 7-5 to win the year-end ATP Tour World Championship in front of a decidedly pro-Becker German crowd in Frankfurt, Germany. “I am playing maybe better than I have in my whole career,” says Becker, whose best major performance during the 1992 season is a quarterfinal showing at Wimbledon. “To come back that quickly, I didn’t expect…I had to suffer a lot this summer. Not playing the French and then not being able to do great at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open…and I felt like I still had it in me, and I wanted to bring it out.”
