Without Coco Gauff, Jess Pegula and Emma Navarro, Team USA Falls To Unheralded Slovaks At BJK Cup

With Top 10 stars Coco Gauff, Jessica Pegula and Emma Navarro begging off from representing the United States, the U.S. national team for the Billie Jean King Cup team was an upset loser in the round of 16 of the competition in Malaga, Spain.

An inspired Slovakian team put an early end to Team USA’s Billie Jean King Cup title hopes with a 2-1 victory in a decisive doubles match to move to the event semifinals.

After Taylor Townsend won her first Billie Jean King Cup singles match over 17-year-old junior star Renata Jamrichova, 43rd-ranked Rebecca Sramkova upended Danielle Collins in the night’s second singles, 6-2, 7-5.

Wimbledon doubles champ Townsend and Team USA rookie Ashlyn Krueger lost the decisive doubles match to Viktoria Hruncakova and Tereza Mihalikova 6-3, 3-6 [10-8] after saving six match points to nearly level at 9-all, but the comeback fell just short.

The 2024 season marked the first for Hall of Famer Lindsay Davenport as the Team USA captain.

The U.S. Billie Jean King Cup team awaits its draw for the 2025 Qualifying round, held the week of April 7, 2025. Next year’s format will see three nations play round-robin matches at one of seven qualifying sites, with the winner of each round-robin group advancing to the eight-nation Finals next year.
