Nishesh Basavareddy Storms Into U.S. Open Main Draw Via Qualifying

Nishesh Basavareddy is going back to the U.S. Open main draw.

The 21-year-old American earned his place in the field at Flushing Meadows Friday with an impressive 6-3, 6-1 victory over France’s Arthur Géa in the final round of qualifying.

Basavareddy, ranked No. 148 in the world entering the match, took down Géa, the No. 1 seed in the qualifying tournament and a player who has made a remarkable climb up the rankings over the past two seasons. Géa had risen as high as No. 85 and arrived in New York with plenty of momentum.

But on Court 12, it was Basavareddy who looked like the player in complete control.

The American broke through early and never allowed Géa to establish any sustained rhythm. After taking the opening set 6-3, Basavareddy continued to apply pressure, racing through the second set 6-1 to complete the straight-set victory in just over an hour and 40 minutes.

The victory capped an impressive three-match qualifying run.

Basavareddy opened qualifying by surviving a stern test from 17-year-old Frenchman Moïse Kouamé, winning 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-3. He then dispatched Croatia’s Luka Mikrut 6-2, 6-4 in the second round before facing Géa with a place in the main draw on the line.

It was a particularly noteworthy performance because Géa had already demonstrated that he could be dangerous in New York. The Frenchman defeated India’s Sumit Nagal in the opening round and then survived a three-set battle with Clément Chidekh to reach the final round.

For Basavareddy, however, the final qualifying match was remarkably one-sided.

From Stanford to the U.S. Open stage

Basavareddy’s rise has been one of the more intriguing American tennis stories of the past few years.

The former Stanford standout has established himself as one of the country’s promising young professionals, and his game has already produced some significant results against established players. Earlier this year, he captured the Savannah Challenger title, defeating Jack Kennedy 6-3, 6-0 in the final.

He also made headlines at Roland Garros, defeating Taylor Fritz on the clay during his 2026 campaign.

Now Basavareddy gets another opportunity on the biggest stage in American tennis.

The U.S. Open main draw begins Sunday, and Basavareddy has been placed into the first round against Tristan Schoolkate of Australia.

That means the hard work of qualifying is complete. Three matches, three victories—and now Basavareddy gets to walk through the gates of the main draw at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

For a young American still establishing himself on the ATP Tour, this is more than simply surviving qualifying.

It is another step toward becoming a fixture on the biggest stages in tennis.

And this time, Nishesh Basavareddy didn’t sneak into the U.S. Open.

He earned his way in.
